Do your part for the planet (and your bills) with these simple tips to lower your energy consumption.

The UAE is pushing towards a more sustainable future, with many mega projects in place including the Energy Strategy 2050 which will aim to increase the consumption efficiency of individuals and businesses.

Throw the ambitious Dubai 2040 plan on top (with visionary strategies for sustainability) and World Environment Day earlier this week, and the buzz around our impact on the planet is louder than ever.

Here’s something you might not know – by adopting energy efficient habits, you’re sustaining existing resources while contributing to ensuring the rivers, forests, parks, and wildlife stick around for future generations. Your bills will thank you too of course.

Here are some steps you can take right now to save energy in your home.

Adjust your thermostat

A simple tip to save electricity is to keep your thermostat set at 24 degrees Celsius or higher and ensure your units are set to auto mode instead of on.

By raising the temperature of the air conditioning even slightly, you can reduce your electricity bills and give your AC system a break from the cool, high power setting. According to DEWA, each degree you raise can save you up to 10% of cooling consumption.

Change your light bulbs

If you don’t yet have LED light bulbs, it might be time to make a switch. Regular bulbs waste around 95% of their energy in heat, which is why they get so hot. LEDs use a method called electroluminescence (say that five times fast) that doesn’t release as much heat, resulting in less energy consumption.

These types of light bulbs are also more durable and offer better quality of light. We’ll call that a win-win.

Check your water heater

If you’re able to adjust the temperature of your water heater, switching it to a warm setting will help you save energy. Only see an on-off switch? Turn it off and let Dubai’s scorching weather heat the water for you. Not everything is bad, after all.

Don’t charge appliances overnight

Most of us are used to charging electronic devices at night and forgetting about them until the next morning. The energy consumption doesn’t stop when your phone, laptop, or smart watch hits 100%, so it might be time to reconsider your charging schedule.

Sure, unplugging your phone once it’s fully charged won’t make a huge impact. But if you start doing it with all your devices and appliances, you can save more energy and get lower bills.

Bottom line, moving towards a more energy efficient home doesn’t have to be hard. By integrating these easy practices into your daily routine you’ll be contributing to a more sustainable future while saving some money on your monthly bills.
